One of the most beautiful houses in Bergisch Gladbach and the surrounding area is the Maltese Mill in Herrenstrunden. I especially like the thatched roof. It was re-thatched a few years ago. During that time, I passed by it several times and observed the work being done. It was very interesting.
There is a small sign on the street that provides information about the history of the house:
The Maltese Mill is first documented in writing in the year 1329. During the time of the Order of Malta, it was leased as a compulsory mill for the surrounding farms. The tenants had to deliver a certain amount of ground grain to the commandery. The mill building that still stands today was built in 1728 by the commander Freiherr von Wachtendonk. Around 1800, brandy, beer, and coffee were served in the mill, and in the 19th century, it also served as a dance floor for the Herrenstrunden fair. Regular milling operations continued until 1930 and were finally discontinued in 1944 after a break in the mill ditch. Extensive renovations of the mill building took place starting in 1961."
